The Styx Story
The Vision, Mission, Aims and Objectives of the Centre were redefined to reflect the changing needs of the Community
In 2017 The Western Parishes Youth and Community Centre Trust was reconstituted into a Limited By Guarantee Company, whilst retaining its charitable status and is now known as ‘Styx Centre’.
Styx remains a Community Centre at the heart of the Parish, offering a wide variety of activities within an affordable venue, addressing the wellness and social need of our Community.
The Styx Story began in 1986 when a Charitable Trust was formed by a group of committed volunteers led by Len Corbin MBE, to acquire what was then a Church Hall. This led to the Hall then being known for many years as the Western Parishes Youth and Community Centre.
During this time, the building was substantially extended and the adjoining playground added. The interior was refurbished and improved, making the Centre what it is today.
The initial focus was to provide Youth Clubs and activities for young people of the Western Parishes. More recently, following a change in the way that youth services are delivered in the Island, the Centre’s
purpose in relation to current social need was reconsidered.
Our Vision is for an inclusive Community Centre where people of all ages can connect, have fun, be active and learn whilst improving their health and wellbeing.
Our Mission is to promote and facilitate a diverse range of inclusive high quality activities which address the welfare, health, social and recreational needs of the community through; Sport, Education, Creativity, the Arts, Innovation and Community.
Our Values
Community is at the heart of everything we do
Wellbeing We care about improving lifestyles and social opportunity
Integrity is embedded within all of our thinking and purpose
Quality of provision is fundamental to supporting our vibrant Centre
Inclusivity We warmly welcome everybody and embrace diverse needs
Aims & Objectives
The goal is to realise a vibrant Centre where the Parish and wider island Community has the opportunity to:
Optimise their health and prevent illness
Be educated in, and take part in, the areas of Health & Wellbeing, Sport, the Arts, Creativity and Innovation
Engage with their local Community in an inclusive, secular environment
Hire an affordable venue.
Have fun!
Centre Facilities Available To The Community

There are a number of neutrally decorated, bright and welcoming studio/multi-purpose rooms, two with adjoining kitchens. The ground floor rooms are fully accessible.
Styx provides a very pleasant enclosed park area with a playground, adult outdoor exercise equipment and picnic benches.
The Centre has a small coffee room, where people can sit and enjoy a hot drink purchased from a bean-to-cup drinks machine, at the entrance of the building.
There is a limited amount of parking surrounding the building. Further parking is available at St Peters Church and Le Longfrie Inn (by kind permission of the landlord), or roadside.
In 2017 the interior of the building was refurbished to create modern and vibrant Community spaces. The Centre was renamed ‘Styx Centre’ and a logo created with input from the Centre Community.
We also have several Tenants based at the Centre who are independent business providers that add to the overall facilities both at Styx and within the Parish. These are:-
