Testimonials

We’re very proud of the ‘Styx family’ environment that has been created at the Centre and the varied range of quality activities that we host, with community and wellbeing as a focus. Here are a few snippets of what others think too…

“I hadn't been to Styx for many years since my Children used to attend Youth Club, but now it's a huge part of my life after losing my husband and retiring, I attend the Centre at least 3 times a week now, on Tuesdays for Singing for Health, Thursdays for Yoga and the Friday Toddler group with my granddaughter. We also frequently visit the playground. The quiz night brought me together with my friends and I also happily give voluntary time to help in the pop-up Cafe at the Styx Markets. It all has a great community feel.”
- Ros Hewlett, St. Peters

“This group has saved me. My daughter and I have had some really challenging times over the last year and this has been the one thing that I look forward to in the week. Before my stroke, I had always been an active person and I still like to be doing things.

Art helps me relax and connect in the community and I don’t feel guilty about doing something for myself because I’m making Art.”
- 72 year old female, Arts For Impact participant

“Qi Gong has improved my fitness. It’s good to make new friends and I also do the exercises at home”
- 68 year old Qi Gong participant

“After retiring 3 years ago, from a very busy job meeting dozens of people every day, I felt very lost and lonely. It was suggested that I join the Singing for Health group at Styx Centre. I went along with a certain amount of trepidation, me singing!!!

From the moment I stepped over the threshold I was made welcome. Sam is one amazing young lady, It’s the most inclusive, caring group I have ever belonged too. When I was nursing my dear Mum through late stage Alzheimer's, I had some dark times, but a couple of hours at the group lifted my spirits and gave me the strength to carry on. S4H is not just about singing, its about friendships. You may enter the Centre with the weight of the world on your shoulders but you leave with a spring in your step and a smile in your heart.

I now participate in the Arts for Impact sessions too which I thoroughly enjoy, have made new friendships, developed my skills and similarly, these classes were an enormous help and distraction for me at the time of being a Carer.”
- Jane Quesnel

“I like coming to Styx Centre, it has been really good for my mental health. I have met a wide variety of different people which I probably wouldn’t have in the normal course of my life, which is stimulating and interesting.”

“It (Styx Centre) has given me a new lease of life”

“It provides me with interaction with people not previously part of my social circle and I enjoy coming along”

“I just feel better!”

“My throat and breathing are alot better. I do not seem to catch so much. (colds etc) I am much happier and feel healthier.“

“I cannot praise highly enough this group and what it does for community spirit”

“The Markets are really well organised and there’s great community value here”
- extracts of quotes from various attendees at the Centre

“I’d just like to say how Sam and Singing for Health have helped me get through the last couple of years. I have had problems with arthritis in my hips and had both hips replaced now but just coming along to Styx and being part of the singing group has been so good for my well being.

When I first joined it was because I couldn’t manage keep fit classes but it became so much more than a singing group everybody is so friendly and so much fun.”
- Pauline

“Sorry for just dropping in, but I had to come as this is where I feel safe”

- Verbal quote from a dementia sufferer who attended 4 different sessions a week, having first been referred by her GP under the Social Prescribing initiative.

“Some of my patients who have been coming for a couple of years have been completely transformed, and some of them with really difficult, hard to treat conditions.

You can sense the energy level is different but the most obvious thing that happens is that they need less medication, particularly less painkillers.”
- Dr Piers Mitchell, GP

“The sense of fulfillment has given me a greater confidence in myself”
- Arts for Impact participant.

“I decided to join Singing for Health when I was sadly widowed.  The group immediately made me feel at home, were so welcoming and inclusive.  I hadn’t sung since school days and therefore slightly reticent about my ability to be part of a choir, but I needn’t have worried!  S4H is not about being in tune or singing the right notes, it is about being part of a supportive, caring group of people who all look out for each other whilst having a lovely couple of hours exercising our lungs and laughing.

The songs are familiar and the conductress, Sam is just awesome.  She just exudes warmth and confidence in each and every one of us.  During lockdown, I really missed the weekly sessions and I hope it won’t be long before we can all be singing at Styx again”
